Nel 1891 è costretto a interrompere gli per lavorare in una ditta di importazioni. L'anno dopo segue un corso serale alla Scuola di Belle arti di Le Havre, dove conosce Othon Friesz. Nel 1900 ottiene una borsa di studio e raggiunge Friesz a Parigi: insieme frequentano l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, l'atelier di Leon Bonnat e affittano uno studio a Montmartre. I primi dipinti di Dufy, eseguiti tra il 1901 e il 1904, si ispira» all'impressionismo di Boudin. Nel 1903 partecipa per la prima volta al Salon cles Indépendants, dove esporrà fino al 1936. Nel 1905, di fronte al quadro di Matisse :Lusso, calma e voluttà si entusiasma per la pittura fauve, verso cui si orienta negli anni successivi, insieme a Friesz, a Braque e a Marquet. Nel 1906 accettato al Salon d'Automne, a cui prenderà parte fino al 1943: Nel 1907, un anno dopo la sua morte, il Salon d'Automne dedica una grande mostra retrospettiva su Cézanne: è un incontro altrettanto determinante come quello con Matisse, perche segna tutta la sua produzione successiva. Nel 1908 Dufy soggiorna a Marsiglia e d'ora in avanti frequenterà assiduamente la località della Costa Ax/urra, attratto dalla calda luce mediterranea che infonde nelle sue tele. Nel 1911 sposa Eugenie Emilienne e stabilisce il suo atelier a Montmartre. Nei decenni successivi compie diversi viaggi e partecipa con crescente successo a numerose mostre personali e collettive, fino alla morte, avvenuta il 23 marzo 1953 a Forcalquier.

"Raoul Dufy - French painter. He and Friesz were schoolfriends and together studied the works of Boudin in the museum in Le Havre. In 1900, Dufy received a local grant enabling him to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he joined Bonnat's studio, and in 1902 he was introduced to Berthe Weill, who showed his work in her gallery. Matisse's Luxe, Calme et Volupté, which Dufy saw at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905, was a revelation to the young artist and directed his interest towards Fauvism. With Friesz at Falaise, Marquet at Sainte-Adresse, and Braque at l'Estaque, he expressed his fondness for pure colour and the charm of beach scenes. It was only after the war that he found his own personal style, producing rapid but precise drawings of frequently plunging perspectives, to which clear colours are applied with a kind of casual freedom. His favourite subjects are regattas, casinos and palm trees, race courses and orchestras, but his representations of the southern towns of Avila and Caltagirone are imbued with equal charm. Alongside his career as a painter, he also worked as an illustrator (Apollinaire's Bestiaire), fabric designer (for Paul Poiret) and decorator (the Fée Électricité for the Palais de la Lumière at the Exposition Universelle in 1937). The 'granddaddy of modern chic', as he was called in Time during his visit to the United States in 1950-51, left one of the most joyful œuvres of his era.
