THE EXHIBITION
THE PLACES OF GIOVANNI FATTORI AT THE FLORENCE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS. PAST AND PRESENT:
an exhibition curated by Giuliana Videtta and Anna Gallo Martucci and promoted by the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze invites visitors to carefully analyse not only the works but also the places that house them.
The exhibition accompanies the visitor through 60 years of Fattori's artistic life but it also offers a unique occasion
to enter the history of one the most important institutes for Florence's artistic life, the Florence Academy of Fine Arts where the union between the Academy of Drawing, the Academy
of Fine Arts and the Academy Gallery that still existed at the end ofthe 19th century has been ideally recreated. Forthe first time, visitors can follow Fattori's footsteps through the loggia,
the cloister, the garden, they can stop in the classroom where the artist taught in his last years (reconstructed with period furnishings), they can enjoy a "view" of the Library, the Refectory, which still evoke the old Convent of San Matteo, ofthe Bartolini's Gallery of Plaster Casts which is today housed in the Academy Gallery but which atthetime was an integral partofthe Academy of Fine Arts and ofthe 17th- century Chapel by Giovanni
da San Giovanni.
At the same time visitors can admire more than 130 works including painting, drawing, etching and engraving. Works that illustrate the life at the Academy in those years - with special attention to the works of the young Fattori and of the teachers (P. Benvenuti, V. Consani, G. Bezzuoli, A. Ciseri, G. Dupre,
E. Pollastrini, G. Moricci, A. Rivalta) - and compare the artist's production with that of his fellow students at the Academy (including G. Boldini, O. Borrani,A. Cecioni, the Purists L. Mussini and S. Ussi, the Macchiaioli painters S. Lega and T. Signorini). The exhibition also examines Fattori's creative themes: from history (Elisabeth the first, Mary Stuart at Crookstone Field)
to military themes (Cavalry Charge, The Massacres in Mantua, Army Manoeuvres), to landscapes and country life (The Tempest at Sea, Oxen with Cart).
Part of the exhibition scrutinizes an artistic and social aspect of Fattori's and the Academy's history: paintings, documents and photos witness the presence at the Academy offema Ie students, after the institution in Florence of the Women's Course of Figure Drawing with Fattori as its teacher.
The exhibition The Academy Today. A Homage to Giovanni Fattori, curated by Luigi Bernardi and housed in the Ghiberti Hall, completes this event: present-day students exhibit their works carried out forthis occasion.
The exhibition is part of Florence for Fattori, a full program of events and exhibitions planned by the art historian Carlo Sisi. On the centenary of Giovanni Fattori's death, the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, together with the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della citta di Firenze - Gallery of Modern Art of Palazzo Pitti, celebrates throughout the year 2008 until the beginning of2009, the most famous of the Macchiaioli painters. LA MOSTRA I LUOGHI DI GIOVANNI FATTORI NELL'ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI FIRENZE. PASSATO E PRESENTE: una mostra, curata da Giuliana Videtta e Anna Gallo Martucci e promossa da Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, che invita ad osservare con uno sguardo attento le opere ma anche il luogo fisico che le accoglie. Il percorso accompagna il visitatore attraverso 60 anni della vita artistica di Fattori ma offre anche un'occasione unica per entrare nella storia di uno degli Istituti più importanti della vita artistica cittadina, l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, riportata idealmente a quell'unità ancora esistente alla fine dell'800 fra Accademia del Disegno,Accademia di Belle Arti e Galleria dell'Accademia. Per la prima volta il pubblico può ripercorrere gli stessi passi di Fattori attraverso la loggia, il chiostro, il giardino; può sostare nell'aula in cui l'artista tenne lezione negli ultimi anni (ricostruita con arredi d'epoca, secondo le fotografie scattate durante le lezioni del vecchio maestro); e può gustare gli "affacci" sulla Biblioteca, sul Cenacolo, che ancora evocano l'antico Convento di San Matteo, sulla Gipsoteca del Bartolini, oggi custodita nella Galleria dell'Accademia ma allora parte integrante dell'Accademia di Belle Arti, e sulla secentesca Cappellina di Giovanni da San Giovanni. AI contempo può ammirare più di 130 opere, fra dipinti, disegni, acqueforti e incisioni. Opere che illustrano il vissuto dell'Accademia in quegli anni, con particolare riferimento alle produzioni del giovane Fattori e dei maestri (P. Benvenuti, V. Consani, G. Bezzuoli,A. Ciseri, G. Duprè, E. Pollastrini, G. Moricci, A. Rivalta) e nel confronto fra la produzione dell'artista con i contemporanei presenti in Accademia (fra gli altri G. Boldini, O. Borrani, A. Cecioni, i puristi L. Mussini e S. Ussi, i macchiaioli S. Lega eT. Signorini). La mostra ripercorre anche i temi creativi di Fattori: quelli di storia (Elisabetta d'Inghilterra, Maria 5tuarda a/ campo di Crookstone), i temi militari (Carica di Caualleria, G/i eccidi di Mantoua, Grandi manoure), quelli di paesaggio e vita di campagna (Tempesta su/ mare, Boui a/ carro). Parte dell'esposizione approfondisce un aspetto artistico e sociale della storia di Fattori e dell'Accademia: quadri, documenti e immagini fotografiche testimoniano la presenza in Accademia delle allieve, dopo l'istituzione a Firenze del Corso femminile di Disegno di Figura affidato all'insegnamento dello stesso Fattori. Completa l'evento espositivo la mostra intitolata L'Accademia oggi. Un Omaggio a Giouanni Fattori, a cura di Luigi Bernardi, che trova spazio nell'Aula Ghiberti: gli allievi attualmente iscritti espongono le loro opere, realizzate per l'occasione. La mostra è uno degli appuntamenti di Firenze per Fattori, il ciclo di esposizioni e di eventi progettato dallo storico dell'arte Carlo Sisi. Nel centenario della morte di Giovanni Fattori, l'Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, con la Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della città di Firenze-Galleria d'arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti, celebra per l'intero 2008 fino agli inizi del200gla figura del più noto dei Macchiaioli.
